Jalan Morrell

There is a street in Tawau named Jalan Morrell. 

Some of us may wonder the story behind the name Morrell.

We did a little background check and we found out that Jalan Morrell was named after a celebrated and distinguished gentleman of long serving British North Borneo Company administrator and officer, Mr Edward William Morrell, of which among his many personal accomplishments, a former Tawau's Resident, East Coast Resident, High Court Judge, Chief Justice and former Acting Governor for his contribution to the development of Tawau, East Coast and North Borneo.

This service record perhaps can actually enlighten us the life experience of a former government officers before the second World War in North Borneo.

Notes comments on his retirement by a friends:

In sport too he has always been to the fore. In "Cricket, in tennis, in golf, as all of you know, he is still a formidable opponent- although I fear his soccer days are over, but there was a time when he was the best back the territory has seen. We well remember the game on the padang- close upon a quarter of a century ago, between Sandakan and H.M.S. Yarmouth when our back, it was Mr. Morrell, took a mighty kick at the ball and a Cockney Jack Tar made the priceless remark "Blimey, Guvnor, keep it on the island".
