Jalan Cole Adam

Jalan Cole Adams

There is a street in Tawau named "Jalan Cole Adams”. Some of us may wonder and perhaps wishes to know the story behind the name "Cole Adam".

We did a background check and found out that Jalan Cole Adams was named after a distinguished gentleman of a long serving British North Borneo Company administrator and officer, Mr Bernard Randall Cole Adam, Son of Ethel King Cole-Adam, of Marie Louise Club, Sunninghill, Berkshire, England and of the late A. Cole Adams ; husband of Doris Cole Adams and a younger brother of Wilfred Carne Cole Adam of which also served in British North Borneo Company with long and distinguished record from being a Chief of Police Sandakan to Commandant and Inspector of Prisons.

In January 1942, North Borneo was invaded by Japanese Imperial Army. On the 24th January 1942 the Japanese troop advanced around the Coast of Borneo, from Kuching to Jesselton, Sandakan lastly Tawau and the forces were sighted from Batu Tinagat.

The District Officer Bernard Randall Cole Adam and his assitant met the invaders at the wharf and were arrested immediately.

Wilfred Carne Cole Adam was interned with his brother Bernard Randall Cole Adam and wife at Berhala Island, Sandakan and later transferred to Batu Lintang Prisoner of War Camp at Kuching, Sarawak.

Bernard Randall Cole Adam, after 44 months in Japanese prison camps died in September 1945 on the very day of release by the Allied Forces.

Our record shows that Bernard Randall Cole Adam, died at Batu Lintang Camp, Prisoner of War at Kuching Sarawak on the 11.09.1945, age 48 years old.

Among Bernard Randall Cole Adam's many contribution and accomplishment, a former Acting Resident of Tawau, Acting East Coast Resident, Acting District Offcer East Coast District Tawau and District Officer East Coast prior to Second World War.

This service record perhaps can actually enlighten us the life experience of a former government officers before the second World War in North Borneo.
